Due to space limitations this paper will consist of the essential elements in a definition and of my long-standing point of view regarding learning disabilities. A complete statement and an expansion of this article can be found in W. M. Cruickshank, “Learning Disabilities: A Definitional Statement,” Chapter 6, pp. 80-110; and “Learning Disabilities: Perceptual or Other?” Chapter 7, pp. 111-122, both in W. M. Cruickshank, Selected Writings: Learning Disabilities, (Vol. 2). Syracuse: Syracuse University Press, 1981.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68594/2/10.1177_002221948301600111.pd

The problem of the Sexta parte de comedias escogidas

    Get PDF
The bibliography of the Golden Age is complicated by pirated editions which can be deceptive. After analyzing different printing techniques used by professionals and pirates in the Golden Age, the author takes up the well-known problematic existence of several varying copies of the 'Sexta parte de comedias escogidas'. This paper tries to make hypotheses about where and when the sueltas of the 'Sexta parte de comedias escogidas' were produced, as well as about the place and date of assembly of the volumes

The characteristics of epidemics and invasions with thresholds

In this paper we report the development of a highly efficient numerical method for determining the principal characteristics (velocity, leading edge width, and peak height) of spatial invasions or epidemics described by deterministic one-dimensiohal reaction–diffusion models whose dynamics include a threshold or Allee effect. We prove that this methodology produces the correct results for single-component models which are generalizations of the Fisher model, and then demonstrate by numerical experimentation that analogous methods work for a wide class of epidemic and invasion models including the S–I and S–E–I epidemic models and the Rosenzweig–McArthur predator–prey model. As examplary application of this approach we consider the atto–fox effect in the classic reaction–diffusion model of rabies in the European fox population and show that the appropriate threshold for this model is within an order of magnitude of the peak disease incidence and thus has potentially significant effects on epidemic properties. We then make a careful re-parameterisation of the model and show that the velocities calculated with realistic thresholds differ surprisingly little from those calculated from threshold-free models. We conclude that an appropriately thresholded reaction–diffusion model provides a robust representation of the initial epidemic wave and thus provides a sound basis on which to begin a properly mechanistic modelling enterprise aimed at understanding the long-term persistence of the disease

Prior History of Learning Disabilities in Reye's Syndrome Survivors

Twenty-six children, ages nine-18, who had recovered from Reye's syndrome were tested for possible memory deficits. In reviewing school histories, an unexpected finding was the disproportionately high number of students who were Learning Disabled before contracting Reye's syndrome. Seven of the children had been receiving special education services for being Learning Disabled and another two were viewed by their schools as being hyperactive. This is 10 times the expected incident rate. This group of Learning Disabled students did not score significantly worse on any measure than did the other children who had Reye's syndrome.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68975/2/10.1177_002221948501800607.pd

Algunos hitos en la evolución de lo cómico en Calderón

    Get PDF
At first sight, Calderón is a much less «autobiographical» writer than Lope: for example, he has no character like Lope’s Belardo to give us the author’s point of view. It is clear, however, that he refers in some works to his own situation and to that of members of his family. It is also clear that he was very interested in intelligent and determined female characters, although we cannot identify his non-historical models for these, if there were any. Nor is it easy to know why he began to experiment with dark comedies in the late 1630s, although his critical attitude towards men who ill-treat women is still found in late works such as ‘Fieras afemina amor’ (1671) and ‘Las armas de la hermosura’ (1676)

Francisco de Avellaneda is one of the less famous dramatists of the seventeenth century: he acted as a censor, and is best known as an entremesista, but he also wrote a zarzuela, “El templo de Palas” One of the British Library’s collected volumes of Spanish plays (T.1737) contains a copy of the only known edition (Naples, 1675) of the play, premiered in July 1675, probably in the Coliseo del Buen Retiro. The suelta provides the only known details of this performance, naming the actors who took part in the loa, entremés and mojiganga, and includes a letter from Calderón to Avellaneda, apologising for missing the performance because of his «poor health», thanking Avellaneda for lending him the borrador to read, and assuring him that he was able to imagine the performance from the written text. Avellaneda wrote one of the approbations for Calderón’s “Cuarte parte” in 1672, but the extent of his friendship with the dramatist is not clear

Online Adaptive Learning: A Study of Score Validity of the Adaptive Self-Regulated Learning Model

    Get PDF
Adaptive Learning (AL), a new web-based online learning environment, requires self-regulated learners who act autonomously. However, to date, there appears to be no existing model to conceptualize different aspects of SRL skills in Adaptive Learning Environments (ALE). The purpose of this study was to design and empirically evaluate a theoretical model of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in ALE\u27s and the related questionnaire as a measurement tool. The proposed theoretical model, namely, “Adaptive Self-Regulated Learning (ASR)”, was specified to incorporate the SRL skills into ALE\u27s. Based on this model, the Adaptive Self-regulated Learning Questionnaire (ASRQ) was developed. The reliability and validity of the ASRQ were evaluated via the review of a content expert panel, the Cronbach\u27s alpha coefficients, and confirmatory factor analysis. Overall, the results supported the theoretical framework and the new ASRQ in an ALE. In this article, the theoretical and practical implications of the findings were discussed

Cloud-based identity and identity meta-data: secure and control own data in globalization era.

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a new identity, and its underlying meta-data, model. The approach enables secure spanning of identity meta-data across many boundaries such as health-care, financial and educational institutions, including all others that store and process sensitive personal data. It introduces the new concepts of Compound Personal Record (CPR) and Compound Identifiable Data (CID) ontology, which aim to move toward own your own data model. The CID model ensures: authenticity of identity meta-data; high availability via unified Cloud-hosted XML data structure; and privacy through encryption, obfuscation and anonymity applied to Ontology-based XML distributed content. Additionally CID via XML ontologies is enabled for identity federation. The paper also proposes that access over sensitive data is strictly governed through an access control model with granular policy enforcement on the service side. This includes the involvement of relevant access control model entities which are enabled to authorize an ad-hoc break-glass data access which should give high accountability for data access attempts
